Cemeteries are host to a range of design elements, notably in monuments and headstones as well as the horticultural elements of the grounds. This tour will take you through some notable interments of Melbourne General Cemetery, speaking to their historical and design significance. It will also highlight key aspects of Project Cultivate, a pilot horticultural uplift project.
This tour is designed to be enjoyed at your own pace. It can be completed in one, or multiple visits. Please be mindful when planning your tour that this is a trial and will be available until July 31. The complete walking distance is around 3km, and the audio length is 45 minutes.
Before visiting, please ensure you have appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather. The tour mostly follows paved roads, however sometimes traverses gravel pathways. There is limited mobile reception in some parts of the cemetery, so please consider downloading the tour before beginning. There are signs along the route to assist, as well as audio directions and a visual map.
Melbourne General Cemetery is a working cemetery so remember to be mindful to anyone you may encounter. Keep an eye out for cars, bicycles, and buggies.
